This study-unit will provide a basic introduction into the field of international migration as a major challenge of the 21st century facing practically all countries of the globe. The first part of the study-unit will introduce some general concepts and definitions relevant to the study of international migration. This will be followed by a brief historical overview of migratory movements in different parts of the world. The study unit will then discuss several specific aspects which are of relevance to contemporary migratory flows. These will include the so-called root causes of migration, integration issues, the relationship between migration and development, as well as migrant smuggling and human trafficking. The last parts of the study-unit will be devoted to migration control policies, i.e. measures adopted by states aimed at controlling migration. Such policies will be discussed at the domestic and international levels. The study-unit will also discuss the EU鈥檚 policies on migration and asylum.
This micro-credential is offered as part of the programme for the Liberal Arts and Sciences and will only be offered subject to a minimum number of applications received. More information can be found on the PLAS website.
